Port of Lyttelton
Lyttelton connects Canterbury’s producers and importers with ocean shipping through a harbour close to Christchurch. Its waterfront combines container handling with bulk cargo, vehicles and passenger facilities, serving a trading region that extends well beyond the coastal town.
The port includes a container terminal, a coal terminal and liquid bulk facilities, alongside quays for conventional and project cargo. A dry dock adds vessel maintenance to the harbour’s activities. Separate cruise infrastructure accommodates passenger calls within the wider working port.
The inland network includes CityDepot and MidlandPort at Rolleston. MidlandPort’s rail connection links the waterfront with warehouses and distribution businesses inland, allowing containers to move between the port and customers away from the quays. This relationship between coastal terminals and inland facilities is central to Lyttelton’s role in the regional freight system.
