Port of Auckland
Auckland’s commercial port occupies the Waitematā waterfront beside the city centre. Container handling at Fergusson Terminal is complemented by a group of multipurpose wharves serving vehicle imports, general freight and bulk cargo.
The multipurpose area lies west of Fergusson and includes Bledisloe, Freyberg and Jellicoe wharves, together with the finger wharves at Marsden and Captain Cook. Cargoes include steel, timber, dry and liquid bulk, containers and vehicles. Roll-on/roll-off ships use these facilities to discharge cars and other wheeled equipment.
Many vessels working at the multipurpose wharves also serve Pacific island markets, giving the port a regional distribution role alongside its metropolitan supply function. Within this waterfront, container yards and other cargo spaces accommodate different handling methods, linking overseas shipping with the movement of goods into and through Auckland.
