El Jadida: an Atlantic harbour for the local fishing fleet
El Jadida’s harbour is a fishing port on the Atlantic waterfront, serving a different role from the large industrial terminals farther along the coast. Its quays and harbour basin provide a compact working base for the local fleet.
The modern port infrastructure began taking shape in 1924, followed by further expansion in 1949. The layout includes an outer-harbour quay, quays around the inner basin and land beside the water for port activities. This established arrangement gives fishing vessels access to shore within the city’s coastal setting.
Road connections link El Jadida with Casablanca and the surrounding region. The harbour’s importance lies in its relationship with fishing and the local economy, while the separate facilities at Jorf Lasfar support a much larger industrial cargo trade.
