Butinge: offshore crude oil transfers for the Mazeikiai refinery
Butinge is a crude oil terminal linking tanker transport in the Baltic Sea with the Mazeikiai refinery. Its marine operations use an offshore single point mooring, a buoy at which tankers connect to the transfer system, rather than a conventional quay alongside the shore.
The offshore installation forms part of a larger complex. A submarine pipeline connects it with onshore tanks and equipment at Butinge, while another pipeline links the terminal with the refinery. Oil storage and pipeline transfer therefore connect the marine and inland parts of the operation.
The terminal was built for both importing and exporting crude oil. ORLEN Lietuva describes leak detection and seawater and groundwater monitoring among its environmental controls, reflecting the importance of managing oil transfers across the offshore and coastal sections of the system.
