Chioggia: fishing and commercial trade in the Venetian lagoon
Chioggia combines fishing, commercial cargo handling and small cruise ship calls at the southern end of the Venetian lagoon. Its working waterfront supports a wholesale fish market as well as trades in bulk commodities and oversized industrial cargo. This mixture gives the port a broader economic role than its passenger traffic alone suggests.
Vessels enter through the Chioggia lagoon inlet to reach the inner port areas. Val da Rio provides commercial cargo facilities, while passenger activity has its own terminal within the wider harbour. Quays and sheltered waterways connect these different parts of the port.
Fishing remains closely tied to the city’s waterfront economy, and the commercial terminals link regional businesses with maritime transport. Cruise calls add visitors to this established working harbour, alongside the vessels carrying goods and landing fish.
