Port of Catania
Catania’s port combines commercial shipping with cruise arrivals on the city’s eastern waterfront. Breakwaters enclose its harbour basins, creating separate working areas for freight and passengers beside the urban centre and beneath the wider landscape of Mount Etna.
The cargo facilities accommodate containers, conventional goods and roll-on/roll-off traffic, in which vehicles move between ship and shore by ramp. Grain handling provides another use for the commercial quays. These activities connect the harbour with the supply and distribution needs of the surrounding region.
The cruise terminal occupies Sporgente Centrale, where embarkation and disembarkation facilities support passenger calls. Its proximity to the city makes the port an arrival point for visitors as well as goods. Catania’s waterfront therefore serves both the practical movement of freight and the visitor economy of eastern Sicily.
