Port of Georgetown
Georgetown’s cargo waterfront lines the Demerara River close to its Atlantic entrance. A series of wharves and terminals serves containerised goods, conventional freight and bulk commodities, linking maritime transport with the capital’s trading and distribution businesses.
The river port includes facilities for sugar, grain, cement and petroleum products as well as general cargo. Operators maintain their own quays and storage arrangements along the banks. John Fernandes, for example, combines riverfront port facilities with an off-port terminal used within its wider cargo and warehousing operation.
The distinction between quayside handling and storage away from the river is important to the port’s layout. Ships work individual waterfront sites, while consignments continue through yards, warehouses and road transport. Georgetown’s commercial harbour is therefore a connected riverfront network serving different cargo owners and industries.
