Tornio: urban riverfront and steel trade through Röyttä
Tornio’s urban riverfront is separate from Röyttä, the coastal harbour south of the city where seaborne industrial trade serves the Outokumpu steelworks. Röyttä lies on the Bothnian Bay, with cargo activity closely tied to steel production.
Exports include steel and ferrochrome, an alloy used in stainless steelmaking. Inbound cargoes include recycled steel, coke and limestone, alongside natural gas. These flows connect the manufacturing complex with suppliers and customers through the northern Baltic shipping network.
Röyttä handles bulk materials and packaged or individual cargo units, with containers and project cargo also included in the operator’s service range. Winter navigation is supported by icebreaking, an important part of maritime access at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia.
