Port of Mariel
Mariel’s container terminal is a principal maritime gateway for the Havana region and forms part of the Mariel Special Development Zone. Its development brought container shipping into a dedicated terminal within the sheltered bay, alongside the port’s established conventional cargo facilities.
The terminal combines a container quay with a stacking yard and handling equipment for both waterside and inland movements. Ship-to-shore cranes work the vessels, while yard cranes organise boxes awaiting collection or shipment. A rail terminal provides an additional connection between the port and inland transport.
General cargo quays and petroleum handling facilities give the wider harbour a broader industrial role. Mariel consequently joins several kinds of freight movement within one bay: containerised trade linked to the development zone, conventional shipments and liquid cargo handled at specialised berths.
