Sarnia: industrial shipping and oversized cargo
Sarnia’s harbour connects local industry with the Great Lakes shipping system at the southern end of Lake Huron. The eastern bank of the St Clair River accommodates commercial vessels, with municipal harbour facilities forming part of a wider industrial waterfront.
A dedicated Oversized Load Corridor links area fabricators with the harbour. This road route enables large industrial modules to reach the waterfront for shipment, and improvements at the North Slip and Cestar Dock support the handling of such loads.
The harbour also provides berthage, storage and vessel repair services. Tankers, bulk carriers, tugs and other working vessels use the surrounding waterway, while petroleum and chemical facilities occupy separate sites along the river. Sarnia’s maritime role therefore includes industrial transport as well as cargo handling at the public docks.
