Ponta Ubu: the maritime end of an iron-ore chain
Ponta Ubu is the export terminal for Samarco’s integrated iron-ore operation. Ore concentrate reaches the coastal complex through slurry pipelines from the mining area in Minas Gerais, before being processed into pellets for steelmaking and loaded for overseas customers.
The maritime terminal sits beside the pellet plants at Anchieta. A breakwater shelters its main pier, which has two dedicated berths, while a separate berth accommodates other cargo. Storage areas support both the shipment of products and the receipt of materials used by the industrial complex.
This close connection between processing plants, storage and ship loading defines the port’s role. Ponta Ubu is the final maritime stage of a production chain linking inland mineral resources with steel markets overseas, with the port and pelletising complex forming parts of the same logistics operation.
