Natal: fruit export infrastructure on the Potengi River
Natal’s cargo harbour lies on the Potengi River, close to its Atlantic entrance. Fruit exports are an established part of its commercial identity, alongside wheat imports and other cargo serving Rio Grande do Norte. The waterfront combines conventional cargo handling with infrastructure developed for refrigerated and containerised goods.
Cargo quays are backed by warehouses, container storage areas and electrical connections for refrigerated units. A passenger terminal adds a separate function to the port, while the river approach connects the commercial waterfront with the open sea through the coastal reef barrier.
The port’s hinterland extends into neighbouring states, linking agricultural production and regional consumption with maritime trade. Fruit handling remains an important specialisation, although the presence of container facilities does not by itself establish the availability of a particular liner service.
