Port of Antwerp
Antwerp combines container terminals with extensive chemical production and storage along the Scheldt. Ships reach the port from the North Sea through the river estuary, bringing ocean trade inland to a large industrial and distribution centre. Its cargo mix includes containers, liquid bulk and goods handled individually, such as steel and machinery.
The harbour extends across both riverbanks. Riverside terminals sit alongside enclosed dock complexes, where locks provide access from the tidal river. This layout accommodates different kinds of vessel and separates specialised cargo facilities across a broad industrial area.
Connections to the inland waterway network allow cargo to continue by barge towards European markets. Antwerp forms part of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, while retaining a distinct concentration of container handling, chemical industry and conventional cargo activity.
