Newcastle: a river harbour with a diversified cargo base
Newcastle’s port occupies the lower Hunter River, where breakwaters guide ships into a working harbour serving the region’s export economy. Coal is a prominent cargo, but the waterfront also handles agricultural products, industrial materials and manufactured goods.
Different precincts accommodate grain, mineral concentrates, petroleum, general cargo and project shipments. The multipurpose terminal supports containers and larger individual loads, with road and rail access connecting the quays to producers and customers inland.
Cruise and marine services add further uses to the harbour. Plans for a new deep-water container terminal and clean-energy facilities form part of a longer-term diversification programme; those proposals are distinct from the cargo infrastructure already operating around the river and its existing commercial berths.
