Narvik: a seaward outlet for iron ore
Narvik provides an Atlantic outlet for iron ore brought by rail from the mining districts around Kiruna and Svappavaara. The port’s position inside Ofotfjord combines a sheltered harbour with a maritime route beyond the ice-prone Gulf of Bothnia.
LKAB’s facilities handle bulk ore, using dedicated berths and ship-loading infrastructure. The railway connection is central to this trade: the waterfront is the point where inland mineral production transfers to ocean-going vessels for onward shipment.
Narvik also has general cargo, container and roll-on/roll-off facilities, alongside passenger and fishing-related berths. These activities give the port functions beyond ore exports, although bulk minerals remain a defining feature of its infrastructure and its relationship with the inland transport network.
