Rocky Point: Jamalco’s alumina export terminal
Rocky Point is the maritime outlet for alumina produced at Jamalco’s Halse Hall refinery. The refinery converts bauxite into alumina, an intermediate material sent to smelters for the production of aluminium, before the product moves to the coast for export.
A rail connection links the refinery with the dedicated port. At the waterfront, the alumina conveyor system feeds ship-loading operations, joining the land-based processing chain to bulk sea transport. This specialised infrastructure is central to the terminal’s role in the wider mining and refining business.
The connection between plant and port became clear after Hurricane Beryl damaged the loading equipment in 2024. Jamalco reported the resumption of alumina shipments following repairs that September. Rocky Point’s significance rests on maintaining this physical link between an inland refinery and its overseas customers.
