Tarahan: coal moving from mine railway to export terminal
Tarahan is a dedicated coal outlet for Bukit Asam’s mines at Tanjung Enim. The terminal brings rail transport and seaborne bulk shipping together on Lampung Bay, forming the coastal end of a supply chain that starts in the coalfields inland.
Coal arrives in railway wagons and is discharged using rotary car dumpers, machines that tip the wagons to empty their loads. Stockpiles provide an intermediate holding stage before the coal moves towards the waterfront for loading aboard ships. This arrangement ties the port’s work closely to the railway serving the mines.
Bukit Asam has also modified the terminal’s material handling systems to reduce energy use and dust. These measures concern the everyday movement and storage of coal, the cargo around which Tarahan’s infrastructure is organised.
