Sabang: a sheltered free port on Pulau Weh
Sabang’s harbour occupies a sheltered bay on Pulau Weh, close to the western approaches to the Strait of Malacca. Its free-port role gives the town a commercial maritime function, while visiting cruise ships and yachts connect the waterfront with the island’s tourism economy.
The bay contains commercial quays and separate facilities for different vessel activities. Cruise calls use the CT-3 terminal, where arrivals bring passengers ashore for visits around Sabang. These operations form part of the wider free-trade and port area managed by BPKS.
Sabang’s combination of harbour shelter, commercial facilities and visitor traffic gives it several maritime roles. Goods and supplies move through the port area, while passenger spending supports local services. The northern harbour is distinct from the island’s Balohan ferry facilities farther south.
