Port of Mumbai
Mumbai’s port occupies the eastern waterfront of the city, combining enclosed docks with specialised berths farther out in the harbour. Its established cargo role centres on liquid bulk, general cargo and industrial equipment, alongside a passenger and cruise business.
Indira Dock forms part of the main dock system, while facilities at Pir Pau and Butcher Island serve different liquid cargo operations. This distribution separates much of the tanker activity from cargo worked within the city docks, where individual consignments require quayside handling and storage.
The harbour also contains a separate major port at Nhava Sheva. Mumbai’s own facilities have a distinct operating role within this wider shipping area, with their mix of dock cargo, energy supplies and passenger traffic tied to the city’s long-established waterfront.
