Magdalla: barge handling on the Tapi River
Magdalla is a river port where barges connect shoreside cargo facilities with vessels at deeper offshore anchorages. Its jetties stand on the southern bank of the Tapi, serving the industrial and commercial area around Surat.
This lighterage system transfers goods between larger ships and smaller craft before the cargo reaches the river berths. Open storage plots, lifting equipment and a weighbridge support the landward handling of imports, which include coal, rock phosphate and machinery.
The river’s tidal conditions and changing sandbanks shape access to Magdalla. Its role should also be distinguished from the larger specialised terminals within the wider Magdalla–Hazira port area: the river jetties have a different layout and handling system from the coastal container, gas and industrial facilities.
