Port of Kochi
Kochi’s commercial harbour connects the Arabian Sea with the sheltered waters around Willingdon Island and Vallarpadam. Also known as Cochin, the port combines general cargo and liquid bulk facilities with a separate container terminal in the wider harbour system.
Around Willingdon Island, the Ernakulam and Mattancherry channels lead to working quays. These include facilities for conventional cargo, fertiliser and petroleum products, reflecting the port’s role in supplying industrial and commercial activity ashore. Different cargoes use berths suited to their loading and storage requirements.
Vallarpadam provides the container component of this maritime gateway, while the older waterfront retains other cargo functions. The port’s island-and-channel layout therefore divides activities across several locations, joining ocean shipping with the trading, processing and distribution needs of the surrounding urban region.
