Acajutla port: a harbour serving several trades
Coffee exports are part of Acajutla’s commercial identity, but its waterfront handles a much wider range of goods. Containers, refrigerated cargo and liquid bulk move through the port alongside other general cargo. Its infrastructure serves several different supply chains within the same harbour.
The main facilities comprise eight berths across piers A, B and C. Their cargo mix includes grain, fertiliser, sugar and vehicles, as well as containers. This variety matters when interpreting port activity: a ship carrying bulk grain and one carrying containers have different handling requirements, even when they call at the same port.
Exposure to the sea is another defining feature. Strong westerly winds can generate heavy seas and cause vessels to surge at the piers. Weather therefore forms part of the operational picture alongside berth availability and cargo handling. The nearby offshore tanker facilities are separate installations and should be distinguished from the main port’s piers.
