Rio Grande: an Atlantic outlet for the southern hinterland
Rio Grande links the Patos Lagoon waterway system with Atlantic shipping. The approach channel serves a port complex whose cargoes include agricultural products, fertilisers and petroleum, connecting the surrounding production region with overseas markets and imported supplies.
Facilities are distributed between Porto Velho, Porto Novo and Superporto. The older waterfront, multipurpose quays and specialised terminals have different roles, with container handling and bulk cargo installations forming part of the wider complex along the channel.
This arrangement allows several types of freight to use the same maritime gateway while requiring different storage and handling facilities. Grain and other agricultural shipments give the port a strong export function, while incoming industrial and farm inputs support businesses across its inland market. The channel also connects with other ports within the lagoon system.
